Holker Street Newsletter 808 - 16th May 2001

The last edition of the Newsletter had the wrong number on it, it should have been number 807, it wasn’t, it was 808, just like this one, confused? So was I.

Finally, I’ve mentioned this site before, but the Barrow AFC Soccer Bar has a website run by Robert Chapman, and this can be found at .

Thanks to Peter Caldwell, Mark Edmondson, Flag Man, Ron Duxbury, Tony Kempster and Terry Kendall for their help with today’s edition.

DOC'S DEAL
Skipper Doherty and striker Ellison set to stay with AFC
By Neil Lauderdale, Evening Mail, Tuesday 15 May

Neil Doherty and forward Lee Ellison have given Barrow a massive boost by indicating they are ready to commit their futures to Holker Street. Both are still to re-sign for the club, but AFC boss Kenny Lowe has said neither player has expressed a wish to leave. Their signatures would ensure Lowe has more or less the same squad for next season with the services of all but two of his current squad virtually secured. Only the futures of young strikers Grant Holt and Gareth Jones have yet to be sorted out. Other players who have agreed to stay at AFC over the past couple of days include Lee Rogers, Jason Ainsley, Graham Anthony, Anthony Hall, Darren Roberts, Andy Hill, Mike McKechnie and Steve Gill. Lowe said: "We have more or less got everyone signed that we want. Everyone is tied up or agreed to stay. Not one player has indicated that he could be leaving. Doe and Lee are still to sign, but Doc and Lee have both said they want to stay. It’s tremendous. It’s happened a lot quicker than I thought it would, but obviously it’s still got to be sanctioned by the board and run by them." And he said of Holt, a loan signing from Third Division Halifax Town: "He did not sign at the weekend when Lee (Turnbull) was speaking to him. Obviously he’s very interested, but he wants to see what’s out there first. His aspirations are still to play in the Football League."

Lowe also laughed off Internet rumours today surrounding his own future at the club after a posting was made on the UniBond League website saying he had resigned, but Lowe assured fans he is going nowhere and he even posted his own message to say so. He added: "It’s a load of rubbish. I don’t really bother with it (Internet) normally, but I thought with us trying to sign new players people might read into that and say 'I’m not going there.'"

Ralph’s note: Glad to see Kenny dispelling this tale, but as a correction, the message was posted anonymously to a fans’ forum dedicated to the UniBond League, and not the League’s own site, there is no official UniBond League site, yet. This is the note Kenny put on the Barrow AFC fans’ forum:

Just a little note to confirm I have not resigned. It’s taken Lee (Turnbull) and I nearly two years to accumulate at the club what looks like a solid team base, lets not let rumour and innuendo threaten that. Also discussions are continuing with numerous players to strengthen an excellent existing squad. Talk like this could effect peoples choices when deciding which club to join. So, please everyone refute these stupid suggestions when talking to our supporters and also other supporters from different clubs.

DAY TRIP TO ACCRINGTON
Further to my comments on the Accrington incident in the last edition of the Newsletter, I have received this from Mark Edmondson, who writes that whilst he was at the game he didn’t see what happened, as he was walking from the other end of the ground (the one Barrow were attacking), but a friend did see the incident and describes it as such:

It happened right in front of me, after the final whistle Simon Bishop, the Barrow goalkeeper, went to the back of his goal to collect his towel and I think someone shouted justice or something similar at him (Accrington scored a late winner) and Simon threw his Lucozade bottle at the supporter. That didn't impress the Accrington supporter, and it was either the Barrow left back or right back (believed to Anth Hall) who came over to the supporter and asked for the bottle back, a request that was declined.

FROM BEHIND THEIR FENCES
From the Colwyn Bay website at .

The Bay retained their UniBond League Premier Division status with a final day win over Barrow at a sun drenched Llanelian Road. The Seagulls had the perfect start, which did wonders for the nerves. From the kick off, Cross gave the ball to Marc Limbert whose ball down the right found James McIlvogue who beat Barrow keeper Simon Bishop, within the space of 10 seconds, possibly the fastest goal ever seen at Llanelian Road. Bay fans were still celebrating that early goal when their side went 2-0 ahead after just five minutes. McIlvogue pounced again as he latched onto another Limbert pass, beating the offside trap and steering his shot past Bishop. The home side were in determined mood, controlling the first half play and they could have gone further ahead when McIlvogue's shot was denied by Tony Hall's clearance off the line, this after ten minutes of the first half. Eight minutes later, man of the moment McIlvogue chested Jonathan Cross' free kick wide of the post, before Barrow created their first real chance of the game on 22 minutes when Graham Anthony shot wide. There was more purpose to the Bluebirds play in the second half, with Wayne Bullimore shooting wide and Jamie Jardine heading Mark Hume's effort off the line. But the Bay were always in control and they could have extended their lead through efforts with Bishop denying Craig Lawton, Alun Evans and a Jonathan Cross free kick, while McIlvogue, Graham Roberts and Marc Limbert saw their efforts go wide.

In the end those two early goals were enough for the Bay and the three points were in the bag to secure the Seagulls’ Premier Division status. After looking down and out only a few games previously, the Seagulls battling qualities coupled with an unbeaten run maintained their place in the League, and meant that Bryn Jones had managed to keep the Bay in the UniBond elite in his final season in charge.

FA BULLETIN ABOUT FUTURE OF THE NATIONAL SYSTEM
The FA today held a consultation meeting with the management of the Football Conference, The Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues to discuss the future of the FA National League System. In advance of today's meeting, each League had presented their proposals to restructure the system, and these views were incorporated into The FA National League System Committee consultation presentation. All parties recognised that restructuring is necessary in order to meet the needs of football at this level, There has been unanimous support for the principles underpinning the review process: that clubs should have the opportunity to progress on merit and that the system must be clear and consistent. The meeting was the latest step in a long consultation process, involving clubs and Leagues. Before further work is undertaken, the FA Board and FA Council will need to approve the direction being proposed. Clubs and Leagues will then be given a full role in the process. The timing for any changes to the FA National League System will depend upon the results of the consultation

I’M STAYING SAYS DROYLSDEN BOSS PACE
By Tony Glennon, in the Manchester Evening News, Sunday Pink 13 May

Outspoken Droylsden chief Dave Pace has vowed to remain in charge of team affairs at the Butcher's Arms in spite of the Bloods' brush with relegation. Six straight defeats sent Droylsden plummeting towards the UniBond Premier drop zone and only a draw in their penultimate game at Leek saved them, but chairman Pace, who said earlier in the season that he'd step down as manager if the Bloods failed to finish in the top five, now insists he'll remain at the helm - though only if he can continue to win the approval of new Droylsden director, Stephen Vaughan. Pace said: "I'm going to be working closely with Steve and he'll be setting me targets which, if I fail to meet, I'll resign as manager, but I'm confident that won't happen because, not only will Steve coming to Droylsden enable me to concentrate more on the team, I've also still got complete faith in my ability. I know I can still do a better job than anyone else - and I intend to prove it."

Pace's determination to stay in the hot-seat would appear to dash, at least for the time being, any hopes Owen Brown might have had of returning to Droylsden. With the Bloods' boss now having forged a new managerial partnership with defender Aeon Lattie, it's hard to see where Brown might fit into the equation. Pace had claimed it was Vaughan's failure to come up with the cash he'd promised him which led to him firing Brown, but he has now confirmed that Vaughan, who, like himself, makes no secret of his admiration for Hyde manage Mike McKenzie, has poured a "substantial" amount of money into Droylsden and between them, says Pace, they intend to develop the Butcher's Arms to Nationwide Conference standard. Droylsden are in the process of buying the pub from which their ground takes its name and, with the help of grants from Tameside Council and the Football Trust, have just started work on moving their pitch and laying new terracing. Pace says he's "uncertain" whether the work will have proceeded sufficiently in time to justify the Bloods applying to join the Conference next season should they experience what would be have to be an incredible upturn in playing fortunes and finish in a promotion position. Such considerations will, says Pace, influence just how much he and Vaughan decide to spend on team-building this summer, but, whatever happens, the Droylsden boss is adamant he'll yet again be clearing the decks to make way for a glut of signings. Pace added: "Our late-season slump has done us a favour in that it has proved beyond doubt that the team isn't good enough and that it's time to introduce new faces. I'll be letting as many as seven players go and bringing in a similar number of quality replacements."

FANS EMAIL PROTEST CALLS FOR CONFERENCE PLAY-OFF SLOTS
By Stuart Hammonds, the Non-League Paper, Sunday 13 May

National newspapers and MPs have been bombarded by Conference supporters in a campaign demanding an extra promotion place to the Football League. Even the NLP, which supported the Conference campaign for two-up, two-down throughout, received more than 50 e-mails and faxes in a single day. The campaign has been conducted by fans angry that there is only one promotion place on offer - and that most sides are left with nothing to play for in the second half of the season. The supporters were also upset at news that the promotion and relegation issue will not feature on the official agenda for the League chairmen's annual meeting next month and will be raised from the floor instead. The campaign began with Stevenage Borough fans on their website forum, but went national when one contributor suggested a site dedicated to 'Fair Play For The National Game'. Messages were posted on the websites of the other 21 Conference clubs urging supporters to send letters to media sources and influential figures. Stuart Govier, who posted the initial message, said:"Someone posted a message asking about the prospect of another promotion place and something just snapped. This wholly unfair practice must stop. I started to post messages saying that we ought to begin a campaign of our own and have been staggered by the response" The group targeted 5000 e-mails to MPs, news groups, magazines, newspapers and TV programmes - as well as targeting radio phone-in programmes. "The list of targets is growing and will expand until someone starts to take notice," said Govier. "We need one automatic promotion place and then, at worst, play-off places for the clubs finishing second to fifth. Everyone from Minister for Sport Kate Hoey down agrees the present system is dated and fundamentally unfair. They must be made to listen and we must have more promotion places up for grabs next season.

BLYTH CASH CRISIS
By Colin Mafham, from the Non-League Paper, May 13

Blyth Spartans could be closed down in six weeks after being hit by a UKP60,000 demand from the Inland Revenue. The UniBond Premier club, managed by John Charlton and whose father Jack has agreed to become president next year, has received notification that the matter is going through the courts for the debt left by the previous administration. Spartans staff have already began fundraising measures which will include writing to clubs across Europe asking for the donation of memorabilia for auction. New media relations officer Jeff King said: "We've already had one anonymous donation of UKP1000, but this is still a very serious situation."

THE UNIBOND PRESS RELEASE
Issue Number 38, period ending 5 May 2001, from the Altrincham website at

Review of the Week
Stalybridge Celtic lifted the Premier Division title and a place in the Conference with a Stuart Locke penalty in the eighth of twelve minutes of stoppage time played at neighbours Droylsden on Tuesday evening where the kick off was delayed for 30 minutes to allow everybody to get in. The bitter pill which the "Bloods" had to swallow with their arch rivals winning the championship on their soil was tempered by the consolation of a crowd of over 2000 to follow the previous Saturday's 3700 which watched Celtic at Emley. For Celtic boss Phil Wilson it was virtually a third Premier Division title in a decade having steered Celtic to their last success in 1991/92 and laying the base which took Leek Town in to the Conference in 1997 before he left Harrison Park to take up the reins at Northwich Vics. It was also a treble for his Celtic side who earlier in the campaign had lifted both the UniBond sponsored Cheshire Senior Cup and the UniBond League's President's Cup. Although they lost in carnival atmosphere at home to Burscough on Saturday over 7000 had seen the Celts in action in their final three games whilst Emley become the first club to achieve 100 points without winning the championship. At the bottom Tuesday's results made very interesting reading with a 3-2 win for Frickley Athletic against Barrow and a very good point for Colwyn Bay at Worksop Town putting the pressure an Droylsden and Leek Town who met on Thursday. They fought out a 1-1 draw which ensured Droylsden's safety but left Leek, Frickley and Colwyn Bay all fretting going in to Saturday's final fixtures. In the event all three won with Leek being the losers and playing First Division football next season. Colwyn Bay, meanwhile, are the first top flight side to concede a century of goals and not finish in the bottom two.

Newcomers Vauxhall Motors secured a second successive promotion when they beat Eastwood Town 4-0 in mid-week to put themselves out of reach of Ashton United despite losing at Hurst Cross on Saturday. They now join First Division champions Bradford Park Avenue in the top tier next season but spare a thought for third place Ashton United who finish in that position for fifth time in nine seasons since joining the League in 1992. At the opposite end of the table, Gretna's win at fellow stragglers Kendal Town on Tuesday allied to Winsford United's home defeat the same evening meant that, as in the top flight, anyone of the three could go down with already doomed Congleton Town going into the last game of the campaign. Gretna's captain courageous Mark Dobie, who scored the only goal in their mid-week success, scored both the Scottish club's goals in a 2-0 victory over Matlock Town and with Kendal Town gaining the point they needed at Trafford, it is Winsford United who are relegated despite their point at Harrogate Town. There will be no reprieve as Rossendale United have the necessary ground grading and will be promoted as NWCL champions along with Ossett Albion from the NCEL.

The League Challenge Cup Final on Tuesday became the third UniBond Final is as many weeks to go to a penalty shoot out with Lancaster City becoming the first club since Runcorn twenty years ago to retain the trophy when they beat Bishop Auckland 4-3 on penalties after Bishop's had missed a kick which would have given them the Cup 4-2.

UniBond "Club of the Month" Awards
The UniBond "Club of the Month" awards for April have gone to Stalybridge Celtic and Bradford Park Avenue respectively. Celtic won eight and lost one of their matches in the month, exactly the sane record as Barrow but were playing under such more intense pressure and, of course, became the first club to lower Emley's home colours in last Saturday's crunch match which attracted a crowd of almost 4000. They also won the President's Cup Final after a long mid-week haul to Blyth Spartans. Bradford lifted the First Division prize losing just one of seven games during which time they clinched the lower tier championship. As they had no home games left at which to make the award they were presented with the prize at Radcliffe Borough on Saturday. Ironically, Borough had been the only team to beat them!

Sports.Com "Performance of the Month" Awards
The Sports.Com "Performance of the Month" awards go to Colwyn Bay and Eastwood Town respectively. The Welsh club's sudden resurgence in their bid to beat the drop after just one win and twenty defeats in their previous 25 outings saw them win four games on the trot - a remarkable achievement in their position which earns them the portable TV that is given each month by the sponsors. The First Division award also went to a side threatened with relegation as Eastwood travelled to Scotland for a crunch match with Gretna and then to promotion seeking Ashton United winning both without conceding a goal. Whilst these wins proved to be their own salvation they dealt massive blows to their opponents.

UniBond "Fair Play" Awards
The final tables for the UniBond "Fair Play" awards where there is UKP5000 prize money up for grabs will appear in the first edition of next season's press release. Current leaders in the respective Divisions. are Marine and Workington.

Play Offs Introduced Next Season
The UniBond League look all set to become the first major League outside the Football League to introduce play-offs. A meeting of club chairmen last Sunday gave the thumbs up to the bold new initiative which it is hoped will give a big boost to the end of season fixtures. The third, fourth and fifth placed teams in the First Division will play off with the Premier Division's 3rd from bottom club with the ultimate winner playing the following season in the top flight. This is in addition to the normal two up, two down and will be introduced next season subject to formal ratification at the League's AGM in June.

Other News in Brief
Chorley midfielder Danny Mills has been placed on contract after scoring 26 goals from his midfield position. The 24 year old has scored nine of his goals from the penalty spot in ten attempts and his overall total of 26 is believed to be a club record for a midfielder.

Peter Mulcaster has become the fifteenth and final casualty of the UniBond managerial scene this season. The Spennymoor United boss resigned towards the end of April after working himself into the ground to keep turning out a team. Senior players Craig Veart, Stuart Dawson and Rob Jones took charge of team affairs with some late success.

17 year old Dave Dugdale is the latest off the Burscough youth conveyor belt. The striker, who hails from a well known Liverpool footballing family which produced 1950s Aston Villa international Jimmy Dugdale and 1970s Coventry City defender Alan Dugdale, scored twice on his first team debut last Saturday against Droylsden.

Altrincham have filled their vacant manager's position by appointing general manager Bernard Taylor to the hot seat for the second time. As before he will have club secretary Graham Heathcote as his coach. The two took the Robins to the UniBond title in 1999.
