Furness kicked off towards the Crossbar end. A close fought encounter saw Sam Stephens deny Andy Bond on a number of occasions in the first half. Just less than a minute in, Stephens blocked a long range shot and after 14 minutes did extremely well to tip another great Bond effort over the bar. In the 38th minute he palmed a low shot by Barrow's No.7 away for a corner. Brierly also came close for Barrow in the dying seconds of the first half when on a one-to-one with Stephens he shot wide.

In the second half, Furness's Liddicott was also at full stretch, tipping a 54th minute Boyd free kick from the left edge of the penalty area over the bar. He also did well to block a dangerous Walker attack in the 63rd minute.

However, Furness had more chances to score in the second half; in the 56th minute their No.17 (Southward?) shot just over from 20 yards and in the 73rd minute, Deasy only just managed to get to a shot from the edge of the penalty area from the same player. Five minutes later, Deasy advanced to block another attack and in doing so fouled outside the penalty area, the resultant free kick from Furness's No.6 going just over the bar. In the 81st minute, Furness's No.12 had a golden opportunity to score from point blank range but the ball hit either the post or a desperate block by a Barrow player.

It was just as well a rapid attack by Barrow in the 66th minute had seen Robin Hulbert score on his debut!
