Paul Jones - Defender

Born 03/06/1978
Defender. Squad No 4: Age 31. Born in Liverpool, Paul began his career with Tranmere Rovers but failed to make the first team at Prenton Park. He also had a short loan spell with Blackpool before being released. He joined Barrow for the first time in August 1997, making his debut in the 3-1 home win over Bishop Auckland. He was a regular in defence that season as the team won the UniBond Premier Division title and despite financial problems the following season, when the club was in the Nationwide Conference, Paul was one of four players who stuck with the club from the start to the end of the campaign. In light of the uncertainty in the summer of 1999 about the League in which we were to play, Paul left and joined Leigh RMI, having made 87 appearances, scoring three times. Within months, his form had earned him a move to Oldham Athletic, then in League One. His progress was restricted by injuries and after 28 League appearances and three goals, he was released in the summer of 2002. He was quickly snapped up by Hyde United and was a regular as they won the UniBond First and Premier Division titles in successive seasons. He left the Tigers in the summer of 2006 to return to Holker Street. Paul was named as the Programme "Starman" and National Supporters' Club "Player of the Year" at the end of the 2006-07 season. He was part of the caretaker-management team between November and December 2007. He skippered the side to promotion from Blue Square North in the Play-off Final at the end of the 2007-08 season. At the end of the 2008-09 season, Paul collected the overall "Player of the Year" award as well as the Programme "Starman", Players’ Player and Independent Supporters' Club Player of the Year awards.
